College Update – British Columbia
April 2012

There is not very much new to report from the BC Task Group for Counsellor Regulation.  These last six months have been a time for us to organize a new approach in our communication and strategy with the provincial government.  We met in early March to plan these next steps.  The provincial government is aware that CASC BC is an Association member of the Task Group as it proceeds with its meetings with CASC BC to establish a standardized delivery of spiritual care across the province.  Options for regulation remain open so CASC BC is continuing its work with the Task Group at this time.  Included in this update, is a summary of the work CASC BC has done to date with the provincial government.

“The CASC BC co-chairs have met with the Ministry of Health on numerous occasions to develop a framework for the delivery of spiritual care in the province.  Through a taskforce established by the Ministry of Health, with representatives from all the health Authorities in the province, clinical and academic standards have been agreed upon and are being introduced to the CNOs and VPs of HR in the Health Authorities through a consultation process.  Following this process an implementation strategy will be developed and taken to the Minister of Health.  The concept of Spiritual Health is being recognized as a core component of an individual’s overall health in BC’s healthcare system.”  (Philip Crowell, CASC BC co-chair)

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Catherine Fortuna,
CASC BC Representative, BC Task Group for Counsellor Regulation
