Research Grant Recipients 2007

  • The first request for funds was from Gary Myatt, (a member from the Atlantic IPT Region), for Contemporary Resources for Supervisory Education.  The project will run from Sept. to Dec. 2007

The results of the Project:

Goal of this project:  At the CAPPE 2006 Convention in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a workshop was presented by two Teaching Supervisors and a Provisional Supervisor. They presented a plea to the Association to provide better resources for supervisory training. The three presenters felt isolated and unconnected to others involved in the same kind of work. As well, the resources they had at hand were limited, especially regarding
supervisory development.  The Education Standards Commission is currently developing curriculum for  Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE). However, it will be some time before the supervisory training is pushed to the forefront. With this in mind, the purpose of this project is to provide a web resource on the CAPPE
Website, which will provide references and access to current resources in supervision. This will be
relevant to supervisory trainees as well as all supervisors who teach SPE. The outcome will be a web
page accessible to Provisional, Associate, and Teaching supervisors which will contain annotated
bibliography of current and classic resources arranged by topic. Additional original resources may be
posted from a survey of current supervisors. It is possible to provide downloadable articles for
personal review. Links will be provided to relevant web-based material.
This resource will be a good foundation for further curriculum development for supervision.  It will
address in part, the concerns expressed by the Supervisors mentioned above. In addition, this resource
maybe built upon in the future. For example, the internet provides the opportunity for threaded discussions that may be added as this web resources blossoms.
Follow up to the Foundation Board: The plan is to establish a supervisory page on the CAPPE website. This would be accessible by password to all supervisors who are members in good standing with CAPPE.

This request was granted $3,000.00

  • The second request for funds was from Glenn Breen, (a member of the Atlantic IPT Region), for Providing Spiritual Care to Pre-Adolescent Children:  What Does The Research Say?  The project will be 4-6 months in duration.

Results of the project:

Goal of this project: “The goal of this project is to conduct an extensive literature review of research studies in the area of spirituality and children, with a special focus upon the spiritual and pastoral needs of pre-adolescent children experiencing illness and hospitalization. Within this overarching goal are several objectives:

  • Improve the spiritual care of children within the IWK Health Centre through an increase in knowledge,
  • To publish a peer-reviewed journal article that synthesizes all the available literature (Literature review article) dealing with spirituality/religion and caring for children’s spiritual needs.
  • To build research capacity in Spiritual Care professionals.
  • To use the information gained through the literature review in order to develop further research grant applications to funding agencies and sources. In particular, to use the information gained through the literature review and content analysis to develop a Grant Application that will be submitted to the IWK Health Centre’s Research Program for funding (Up to $15,000.00). This further funding will go to support a qualitative research project exploring the spiritual and religious needs of hospitalized pre-adolescent children.  The aim of this research endeavour is to provide evidence-based research in order to better equip Spiritual Care professionals to address children’s spiritual and religious needs and to improve quality of care.”

Follow up to the Foundation Board:  Dissemination of results will occur through publication and conference presentations. A presentation at the CAPPE National Conference is expected with posting on the CAPPE website.

This request was granted $2,500.00

  • The third request for funds was from Thomas St. James O’Connor, (a member from the South Western Ontario Region),  for developing a book from presentations at the Niagara Conference CAPPE 2007.  The title is Identity, Practice and Relationships in Ministry.  The projection is to have the book published by March 15, 2008.

Results of the project:

Goal of this project:  1.  To take the best papers from CAPPE 2007 on Identity, Practice and Relationship and put them into a book.  2.  To make this book a resource for SPE in Canada, the US and field education.
3. To sell 1000 copies of this book, repay sponsors and make a profit for CAPPESWONT, CAPPE and other sponsors.
Follow up to the Foundation Board:  The strategy includes surveying SPE supervisors and field educators in Canada to see the benefits of using the book in their programs.  This will also be done in the USA and will be posted on Amazon.com

This request was granted $2,000.00
