Edmonton Multi-site CPE Programs
Alberta Health Services (AHS) Edmonton Zone

2011…2012…2013

Three previously separate CASC/ACSS Accredited education centres are now offering CPE programs as a Multi-Site entity. Alberta Hospital Edmonton (AHE), the Royal Alexandra Hospitals (RAH) and the University of Alberta Hospital/Stollery Children’s Hospital/Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (UAH/Stollery/HI) offer CPE students diverse opportunities to learn about the provision of spiritual care through hospital chaplaincy within major tertiary, metropolitan and mental health settings.

There are six (6) Chaplain Residency positions available each year to qualified candidates. Applicants must have completed at least one basic unit of CPE, a year of graduate academic studies foundational for Spiritual Care Practice1, and be interested in pursuing advanced CPE toward CASC/ACSS professional certification. The year-long Residency program is divided into two parts. First there are full-time supervised units of Basic/Advanced/Supervisory CPE. Then, Chaplain Residents who have completed their two qualifying units of Advanced CPE may remain over the summer months to learn through supervised professional practice and apprenticeship while accumulating some of the required “work experience" hours needed for CASC/ACSS certification.

Candidates interested in taking single units of CPE in Edmonton are invited to apply for one of the Chaplain Internship programs. These are offered each year on both a part-time basis (two days per week from September through April) and full-time basis (twelve weeks from May through July). A maximum of six (6) applicants will be accepted into each Internship program.

CPE Teaching Supervisors – together with Spiritual Care, Aboriginal and Multicultural staff in each of our three Edmonton sites – invite you to join us in learning about the professional role, competencies, and exciting opportunities as well as challenges that are found in hospital chaplaincy. Through colleagueship with other allied health professionals, CPE students learn about the importance of spiritual assessment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and interfaith as well as multicultural spiritual care. Supervised clinical placements provide experiential learning that can enable the development of skills for intensive as well as extensive spiritual/pastoral care within a variety of life situations, crisis circumstances, and long-term care environments.

CPE applications are received throughout the year; screening processes begin in January and continue until all positions in a given program are filled. [Note: It is recommended that international students submit CPE applications no later than ten months before the start date of an intended CPE program.]

Those who are accepted into the Chaplain Residency positions will receive a stipend of $23,500.00 over the course of the year-long program. Residency students pay an administrative fee of $300.00 for each CPE unit. The fee for Chaplain Internship programs is $850.00 per CPE unit.
