NIAGARA HEALTH SYSTEM

Three Unit Residency in Clinical Pastoral Education

The Niagara Health System, through its Spiritual and Religious Care Service is pleased to offer a 3 unit Residency in CPE. In 2010 The St. Catharines General Hospital celebrated receiving a 10-year Accreditation as a Teaching Site from the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).

The Niagara Health System’s St. Catharines General Hospital Site (SCGH) is located approximately 100 kilometers south of downtown Toronto in the city of St. Catharines, Niagara Region’s most populated municipality. The hospital is currently a 265 bed accredited community hospital that serves as the trauma centre for the Niagara region. Its mission is expanding as directives of the Local Health Initiative Network’s (LIHN) Health Improvement Plan (HIP) are implemented. Our health programs include:

Clinical

  • Mental Health (including in-patient, community treatment and sexual assault treatment)
  • Women/Children’s health (including Maternal/Child and Paediatrics)
  • Surgery (including general, vascular, thoracic, plastic, dental, Gynaecologic, Otolarygologic, Orthopaedic, Paediatric, Urologic and Ophthamologic).
  • Critical Care (including emergency, Provincial Level 3 intensive/progressive  care and telemetry)
  • Medical services
  • Oncology and Palliative Care
  • Nephrology/Dialysis

Clinical Support

  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Electro-diagnostics
  • Rehabilitation (including PT, OT, Speech and Recreation Therapies)
  • Pharmacy
  • Case Management
  • Spiritual and Religious Care
  • Social Work
  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Allied Health in OT, PT, SLP

The NHS-SCG Site is also affiliated with and provides a satellite teaching site for McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Medicine and Brock University’s BSc.N programmes. It also hosts students of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Social Work.

Health Care is promoted and provided through an integrated inter-professional and family-centred approach. Building upon previous CPE history here the facilities have proved to offer a wide range of opportunity in which CPE Residents can engage experiential learning in meaningful and formative ways.

Population to whom the Residents will provide Spiritual and Religious Care.

Residents will have opportunity to work within the inter-professional healthcare team in the areas of Oncology and Palliative Care, Mental Health, Maternal Child and Family Services, Surgery, Critical Care (ER, ICU/PCU), Medical Care, Nephrology and Dialysis.

Within these varied areas will be exposure to care of those dealing with Cardiac Rehab, Oncology, Respirology , Orthopaedics, Crisis Intervention (including staff CISD), Death, Dying and Bereavement. Most of the placement areas conduct inter-professional rounds for the purpose of assessment and inter-professional patient care planning.

The St. Catharines General Hospital has a long and expanding history as the region’s largest and main trauma centre. Residents will have opportunity to learn about the Spiritual and Religious care of persons engaging a variety of spiritual and religious health needs uniquely related to the variety of health care issues faced.

Admission Criteria
Applicants will have completed at least one unit of SPE at the basic level, provide evidence of a baccalaureate degree and have completed at least first year of a theological degree at the Masters level(or equivalent) at an ATS approved college. These requirements are in keeping with CACS Handbook and requirements for the ‘Advanced’ education level. A screening and selection process includes a completed application, personal interview and references. There are five resident positions available.

Dates
The residency programme will run September 10, 2012 – May 24, 2013 (8.5 months)

Stipends
Stipends have been graciously provided through funds raised through the
Rankin Cancer Run’ which, each year raises funds for local care initiatives and programmes. Each Resident will receive a $15,000.00 stipend.

Tuition
$1000.00 per Unit payable on the first day of each Unit. Total $3000.00. There are no other applicable fees. Fees and costs for application to Advanced education, insurance and anual membership in CASC are the Resident’s responsibility.

Applications
Applications are processed in the order that they are received. Prospective Residents are encouraged to apply as soon as they are able. Application Form attached.
