CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION
Clinical Pastoral Education is an action/reflection process of theological education that emphasizes a person-centered approach to spiritual care. The purpose of CPE is to assist the caregiver in becoming more effective in the practice of ministry. This education helps participants to
develop a deeper understanding of people's emotional struggles and spiritual experiences and to respond to them with compassion and competence. In the process they achieve greater self-awareness in relation to their pastoral work.
Through the action/reflection process participants evaluate the effectiveness of their style of care in relation to the needs of those served. This approach involves:
Spiritual and religious care of individuals and groups
Individual and group supervision of pastoral work
Seminars, reading, worship, and interdisciplinary conferences
Use of group process for integrating personal story and characteristics with pastoral functioning
